I'm looking for a new set of golf clubs. I am currently playing of 12. I would like to improve on this and was wandering if there is a set of clubs out there that i should be looking for. I use an old set of wilsons and hit them fairly well on a good day but i want that little bit extra now. also are there any good websites for getting the clubs as i am not a rich man.

Cheers tiger!!

  1. You should try anything from MD Golf of Northern Ireland who offer complete value for money. A couple of years ago they produced a model of iron called the MD Superstrong (3-SW)which has a 'muscleback' behind the face. They sold retail at between £250 and £300 but you could pick them up on ebay for about £150. I belive you can still pick these up on ebay for around £100. You cannot go wrong. Don't go looking for any fancy shafts. These are fitted with Apollo Ballistik (Rocket) shafts and regular flex will do you fine. I use them and I play off 3. MD also do a fine range of wedges and utiliies. As for woods, you pays your money and you takes your chance. A lot of guys I play with are finding a little bit (some a lot!) extra with the new Cobra range. Good luck.

  2. what ever suits you, try different clubs not nessiceraly all one brand i've found the driver ,3wood, and the wedges to be most important along with the putter and they are all different brands that i collected over a few years put simply try them if you feel comfortable with them buy them

  3. Being the Callaway fan I am, I would definitely recommend a set of X-20, possibly the Tour model is you like to shape shots.  The X-18 are okay, but I would go with the 20's.   Fair distance, definite upgrade over any Wilson clubs and they would look better in the bag.  Go to your local shop, hit a ton of irons, spend 12 hours there if you have to and get what ever feels the best to you, that is really the best way to do it.

  4. The first point to remember is that almost any set made by a reputable manufacturer will be capable of taking you close to scratch - in fact your old Wilsons could - it's a matter of finding what YOU feel comfortable with.

If money is a driving factor, you're probably best at looking at a manufacturer who does less advertising and sponsoring of pros, and concentrates on making playable clubs at reasonable prices - MD and Benross are the leading names in this area.

If you shop around on the web (don't use eBay unless you want to buy fakes, BTW) you can get a lot of big-name sets for, say, £200-300 or even less, and they're great buys. What you won't get, though, is the chance to hit them first, or to be measured for length and lie - that makes it more likely you'll end up wanting to buy another set soon. Remember what they say, "buy cheap, buy dear". Oh, but if you buy from a pro it's worth asking if they'll "price match" a web price, so do your research first - they'll often at least get close.

Your final option is to go for Ping  who sell their clubs individually from about £65 each. Get a fitting, start off with a half-set (eg UW, 9I, 7I, 5I for about £260), then buy the fill-ins as you go along.

  5. Ok so nobody has recommended any sets to you yet, isnt that the question being asked?

For a handicap as yourself, I would recommend either the Taylormade TP's, Taylormade RAC, Cleveland TA 2, TA 7, CG 4 Tour, Callaway X20, X 18 if you can find them, Titleist 695 CB, Titleist AP 1 or 2, and so on.  Now having said this, the best way to choose is to go and hit them at a golf store and see which one feels the best.  You can decide to have your clubs fitted, which may help some, but maybe only a stroke or two.  Also, your iron set doesnt have to match your driver or anything else like the other answer said.  However, your irons should all be the same.  Once you have decided on what set you like the best, go online and see what deals you can find.  Ebay, callaway preowned, golfsmith preowned, and others are all websites that have used clubs for moderate prices.

    Hope this helps.

  6. Here are some options:

    ebay.com

    gpp.com

    globalgolf.com

    tgw.com

    edwinwatts.com

    golfsmith.com

    golfdiscount.com

    golfgalaxy.com

    rockbottomgolf.com

  7. you might want to have you swing analyzed at your local driving range or store.  They will be able to tell you the best shaft length, lie, etc.  you can then use this to either buy a set that is already made or use a site like diamondtour.com to custom build a set.  you will always play better with a set that is made for your swing then just buying one off the wall

  8. well you should go to the TAYLORMADE PEREFORMANCE LAB.....it will tell you everything you need.....taylorm,ad3e is the best clubs on tour.i recomend taylormade.i play with taylormade and im low handicapper
