  1. You don't say where you live.  Summer heat and winter cold varies widely throughout the country.  Not only that but tree roots are a lot of competition for understory plants.

Here are some that do well in shady spots here in Michigan.

    On-the-dry-side-shade:

    Hostas

    Sweet Woodruff  - Galium

    English Ivy - Hedera helix

    Periwinkle  - Vinca minor

    Pachysandra

Variegated False Solomon's Seal - Polygonatum

    Epimedium

    Medium-moisture shade:

    Bugbane -Actaea (Cimicifuga)

    Goat's Beard  - Aruncus

    Foam-flower  - Tiarella

    Coral-bells  - Heuchera

    Lady's Mantle - Alchemilla

    Bleeding Heart - Dicentra

    Siberian Bugloss - Brunnera

    Damp shade:

    Astilbes

    Ligularia

    Rodgersia

    Ferns - many kinds

    There's a ton of them....

  2. Witch hazel.  This is a unique plant.  It flowers in march and turns a nice color in fall.  There are orange, red and yellow varieties.

  3. I asked the same question a week ago and researched it. I found the best plant. Impatience. It's in the shape of a bush, but is filled with flowers. It loves shade but needs moist dirt. It comes in several colors like Salmon, Lilac, Whit, Red, Pink, and more! They're popular in Florida because of the heat. They are perennials. They also can grow around any other plant, and they enjoy mulch, not so much pine straw. Hope it looks good!!

  4. impatience, lily of the valley, ferns, snow on the mountain, hosta, st. hermans archangel, ornamental grass

  5. it really depends on where your at but maybe a pigmy palm or a fern of somekind

  6. I use the anise plant on the north side of the house which has a lot of shade.

  7. You could investigate using ferns or possibly hostas. Good Luck

  8. Daphne

  9. peony, bleeding heart, monkshood, sweet pea. (Bleeding Hearts are pretty easy to grow and look really nice in a rock garden.)

  10. Lily of the Valley, Hostas, Pansies

  11. you could use mahonias, astilbes, cast iron, fatsia split leaf philodendron and all types of gingers.
