  1. no offense to wildhorsefeather, but use the cage calculator offered and No fishtanks. a tank builds up ammonia and leads to respiratory problems. you wouldn't want to sit in your urine, smelling it. so no tanks. good luck. oh and for babies especially, 1/2" bar spacing.

  2. 1.5 square feet per rat. You should never have a cage less than 16" long or wide. Rats should never have to curl their backs or tails to fit from one end to the other, it can cause permanent damage.

  4. well for one rat ( which you should have 2) bigger then a hamster cage... i got my 3 boys a 3 story ferret cage with ramps and  platforms. The bottom should not be wire as they can get bumblefoot (lumpy red feet...very sad) For the girls i have a homeade wood ferret cage. They are very active creatures who deserve a lot of space.

so the smaller ferret cages wor great. no tanks and no hamster cages!

  5. I agree with horsefeathers. I have 5 female pet rats and have tried wire cages, but had the same problem. I keep two of them in a 20 gallon tank and the other 3 in a 30 gallon. Because rats love to climb, I added hammocks, ladders, etc. along with toys like wheels, chew blocks and hideaways. Be sure to put a mesh lid or chicken wire on top so the rats can't escape. Use one even if the tank is tall, as rats can jump up to four feet strait up. The ammonia DOES NOT build up if you have a LARGE tank. Wire cages have many disadvanteges, inlcuding:

~The rats kick their bedding out

~They will spray pee and poo through the bars on to your walls

~They will form a painful condition called bumblefoot

~Tails, arms, and legs can get caught in the bars, severing them off

~Wire cage can be very expensive

~Rats can flatten their bones, some can squeeze through the bars

I would definatly reccomend a large 20-60 gallon tank.

    Good luck!
