I'm in 10th grade and I run the 800m run. My split for the first lap is 1:02.7. My 400m time in a race is 54 seconds.

  1. you shouldn't really be any slower on the second split.  800 splits should be about even or slightly negative on the 2nd split because of the kick

  2. 60 seconds...then youd have 2:02.7   and you could have like an 8th place in my state

  3. Everyone here says that you should even or negative splits.  In a perfect world that would work, but we don't live in a perfect world.  When Kipketer ran the world record, his first lap was like 48 and his second was 52.  So running negative splits isn't always the ideal way to pr.  I say that whatever your first lap is, try to get at least 1 or 2 seconds close to that your second lap.  I suggest 60 seconds for the first lap, and like 62 for the second.  You are fully capable of doing that if you run a 54 second 400.

  4. If you can run a 54 your 1st lap should be a bit faster...more like 58-59 maybe 60 if you really want to ease and then that second lap is pure guts.  With that kind of 400 talent if you have endurance your times shouldn't be much higher than a 2:03-2:04.

  5. go out in a 60 seconds then the 2nd lap is all guts
