What is a good street bike for a beginner rider?

I want a street bike, no harley types, mopeds or dirtbike types. I want something to drive 10 miles or so to work, to save on gas. I live in a mild climate so I can pretty much ride it all year-round. I need something that doesn’t cost too much; I want to keep my car because it’s almost paid off. I’m a girl : ) but I am strong, have good balance and have some experience with dirt bikes. Any suggestions and some insurance carriers with good rates would be great! Thank you very much!

A kawasaki ninja in 250 or 500.  Good running nice looks, my 500 gets 60 mpg.  I commute 40 miles one way on it.  Progressive had the best rate for me.  I pay 300 a year.  But I am military, had MSF courses and other things.  They still beat out the rest though.

You might consider the Honda Rebel 250. It is light (304 pounds dry). It is very easy to ride. They are used for the motorcycle safety training classes and they are very dependable. My wife has a 2004 model and it is a blast to ride. She drives it to work, about 15 miles each way and gets 70 miles to the gallon. We have had it on the I70 freeway and it has gone 70+ miles a hour on a trip of 120 miles and it did this great! The Kawasaki Ninja 250 has more power, but the Honda runs real good. this guy is right . a ninja 250-500 you don't want to spend a grip on your first ( or beginner bike ) i had a ninja 250. its a lot easier to use to pass your driving test also. remember its not if you crash but when. so save the money and go cheap. wear a helmet.
