What is a good substitute for a Thai chili pepper?

I don't mind the heat, I just don't know where to find them. And I really want to make a dish that asks for them.

  1. Substitutes: chile de Arbol or fresh cayenne pepper or jalapeno peppers (not as hot) or Serrano peppers (not as hot)


  2. If you have access to Indian or Asian grocery stores, they sell the small green Thai variety of chili peppers.  Some large supermarkets may carry them otherwise use serrano or jalepeno chilies.

  3. I have several jars of Indonesian sambals like oelek and badjak. I use them whenever my palate screams to enjoy spicy foods.
