What is a good summer project for a rising 9th grader?

I don't want to waste the tiniest bit of this summer like i wasted all of the summers before. Any one have ideas? I already plan to attempt:

Learn Spanish

Learn ASL (Sign Language)

Learn Play the Flute

I can't volunteer anywhere or get a job because I'll only be 13 and most places say you have to be 14 even to just volunteer.

(My interests include animals, crafts, etc.)

  1. I think learning a second language (Spanish) is a great idea and a very good way to spend your time. Also, if you aren't already a good typer, I would suggest looking into typing classes - that will be so useful when you get to high school to help you type your papers.

What about asking to volunteer at a vet's office?  They might let you help feed and water animals, even at 13.

  2. You could babysit or start an animal care business. Both would give you some extra cash.

  3. I think learning another language is great, especially sign language. It is definitely something you should do! I also recommend learning this flute. Are you taking instrumental music in school? I play and it is a beautiful instrument, just takes some time to learn.

Are you sure you can't volunteer anywhere? I'm sure some places will take a 13 year old. It would be great for your resume and may count towards your community service hours (if you're going to a Catholic high school) Otherwise, it would just be a great experience.

But the best thing to do is just do what you love! Take the time to find out your interests and just grow on them. Relax and take it easy, because from experience, I know high school is no easy ride. I'm in grade 11 and I have no time for my own interests, what with all these projects and things ... so the summer should be a time just to sit back, relax, and enjoy what is to come!

It won't be a waste if you like what you're doing :)

  4. Spanish and sign language will bear you down enough on their own, i really doubt you'll need anything else, although you could just lie and say your 14

  5. Knitting/Crocheting baby hats for the hospital or something for the folks at the nursing home.

Gardening/Learning to preserve what you grow.

  6. I'd make a little garden. There's no better way to know that it's summer and it's so cool to watch things grow and change and produce their flowers and/or fruit. You get to be outside and you become more aware of your little world and the weather and if you have them you can get to know the neighbors. It gives you something to take care of without having to be right there every minute and it's so peaceful and rewarding. Plus you learn a lot. If you wanted you could try planting to attract butterflies or hummingbirds or other wildlife or you could just plant what you think is coolest and bask in it. Whatever you do, don't forget to enjoy your summer. Take some time for reading on the porch with lemonade and cookies!
