What is a good surfboard for a beginner/intermediate?

I just moved out to the SF Bay area, and I would like to buy a surfboard that will last me for a while even as my skills improve. I am looking for more than 'start with a long board or foamie.' Any specific brands, prices, or places to get used boards would be great.

well if you really want, you can learn on a shortboard. i learned on a shortbaord and it was HARD. but anyone can. it will definetly last you when your skills improve. go to a good surfshop and they will usually have a bunch of new and used boards and the guys there will get you everything you need and the right board and equipment. hope this helps. have fun surfing!
