  1. The best resolution on a camera of course is high definition. Good HD cameras will record in 1920 x 1080 resolution. However, do not be fooled by cheap HD cameras like the Sanyo Xacti or the JVC-GZ-MG330, they are not true HD and do not have as good resolution. However, this is the case in most (if not all) flip HD camcorders as well as hard drive HDD camcorders. Any AVCHD camcorder (an HD camera that records on an SD card or HDD hard drive) will not be true HD. These supposedly memory-saving, inexpensive media formats have a catch; they DO take up less memory because they are heavily compressed, which compromises the picture quality and is not true HD. In general, HDV (HD miniDV, like the Canon HV20) cameras are much better, they are usually uncompressed, meaning they have better resolution; they are also compatible with most editing programs, but take a strain on your computer.

In addition, besides HD capability, something else to consider is the size and quality of the image sensor (the image sensor is either a CCD or CMOS). First of all, the more sensor chips, the better; you'll find that pro camcorders have 3 CCDs or 3 CMOS chips. These chips help improve color saturation. In addition, the more pixels per CCD (or CMOS), the better. Most standard definition camcorders have pixels in the hundreds of thousands per image sensor, while HD camcorders have image sensors with a little over one megapixel per image sensor. However, do not be fooled by a high pixel camcorder; be sure to look at how many pixels are "effective pixels". I apologize if that sounded a bit too technical... Hope that helps.
