1. There are opportunities to compete in college for just about every swimmer who wants to compete. The following are just pretty solid educated guesses - and the times are for long course meters:

If you wanted to walk on to a major division 1 university - you should probably be under 1:00.00 in the 100 meter backstroke and under 57.5 in the 100 m fly. You should be under 1:07 in the 100 breast and under 53.0 in the 100 free Those times would be to get a try-out for the top 15 schools or so. For other major d-1 schools, go from there.

Mid-major division 1 or one of the top 5 division 3 schools - you should be under1:03 in the back, 1:01 in the fly, 1:11 in the breast and 56.5 in the free.

For most other ncaa schools, if you are willing to do the work every day and commit, you can compete on the team as long as you aren't in the way.

Then there is the junior college division. Anyone can compete there.

You can also find a masters swim team near you. There are age groups beginning at 18 yrs old. There are competitions locally, regioanlly, cationally and internationally.
