Question:

What is a good time for running 4 miles?

I just started running this year trying to get into better shape. I'm 18 about 5'9 and 135 lbs and I was wondering what would be good times for 1 mi, 2, 3, 4 etc. I have not been really technically timing myself but I was curious today so I added up all the times of the songs I went through on my Ipod while running the 4 miles and it was about 21 minutes. Is that good/bad/decent for a beginner runner?

I think I'm gonna start timing myself more consistently so I can set a goal and see how I improve..what should I shoot for cause I dont really have a clue what is considered good?

  1. wow 21 minutes for a 4 miler is fast. Thats like 5:15 mile which is pretty fast for your age.

For a one mile you could probably get just under 5 minutes

For a 2 mile you could get around 10:30

and for a 3 mile you will come in just under 16 minutes.

These are just guesses for your speed. but those are somegood times. you should trian and start timing.

    Youre times are good

  2. wow thats fast are you positive your course is a full 4 miles

  3. Man thats hecka fast.  I run a 16minute 2 mile and thats kinda fast.  Good job.

  4. if you ran 4 miles in 21 minutes then its good i run two miles in that time

  5. 30 minutes

  6. Ok if you just started running you need to be training for the olympics  4 miles in 21 minutes is a 5:15 mile pace I dont know if your used to running that fast but thats amazing well not amazing but pretty d**n good. I'm a 16 year old XC state champ and thats like my race pace man, good job

  7. the average time is  idk

  8. Geez! 21 minutes makes a 5:15 average and a 10:30 split.

Keeping a 5 minute average is pretty wicked. Are you sure it was 21 minutes? I'm doubting it but I suppose I will believe you THIS time.

Get a watch bcause if you are in high school that could get you a scholarship.. seriously! 2:00 minutes 2 laps is FULL scholarship.

Shoot for better! Your good (huge understatement) and you could always be better no matter what.

  9. I think you should time yourself with a more reliable device. Are you sure that is the pace you are actually running at ( 4 miles in 21 minutes)?

Because if that is the case, you should be running competitively. That would be a ridiculously good time for a beginning runner, considering that you are already running at a pace that would win or place at many races.  Look at the race results on sites like cool running.  You're running at a pace that places you among elite runners at your age.

  10. Since you are probably not in that great of shape, shoot to get about 35 minutes.

Run each mile split in about 8 minutes.

Time it doing your best then the next time you run try to go about 15 seconds faster per mile split.

  11. It depends on your total distance. If you're only running 4 miles you should be able to do that pretty fast especially because you're still young, but if you're going to be doing a lot of miles, then of course your minute/mile will be slower. If you can run under 5 minute miles that would be good. Time yourself with a watch to get a more accurate time.
