What is a good topic for a science essay in 700-1000 words?

The essay's previous winners wrote about spider silk and psoriasis. So far I've looked into alternative medicine and organ allocation but I haven't found anything promising that can be covered in the 700-1000 word limit. If you know a narrower subject under these or have any other ideas, please help. Thanks.

Spider silk is a good one. My lab does research into turning it into body armor. You could talk about DNA, or perhaps the discovery of it. Alzheimer's is a good one. Superman syndrome (XXY genome) is fun. Xenoderma pigmosa (search XP disease). It would help to know how old you are or what grade you are in. You could talk about fusion, solar flares and weather patterns. My favorite topic is about social insects like ants.
