My wife just surprised me with tickets to Amsterdam for my B-day tonight. Tonight as in 5 hours ago. We are leaving this Saturday. We are both 34 years old. As of now, the only plan I have is to be on a plane leaving Tampa at 2:15 this Saturday. Obviously I will do some research via fodders, internet and word of mouth, but with this short notice, any suggestions will gladly be accepted. I figure two days in Amsterdam then travel the country, maybe Berlin, most likely Belgium but nothing is in stone. Suggestions please. I need particulars if possible. Save your suggestions about getting stoned-I plan on it for one night, maybe two, but I'm not going to waste the whole trip in the coffee shops of Amsterdam. If you need to know budget for the week, I would put the my comfort level at about $3500.00 give or take. Thanks in advance.

  1. 3 to 4 days in Amsterdam is planty.  check out all the touristy c**p, for sure.  skip Berlin...hit up Belgium for sure.  Berlin is a trip by itself.  Belgium you can do in a day.  I agree with the other poster...head out to the countryside and Rotterdam.  Have fun, Amsterdam is cool

  2. For Amsterdam I find this website very useful, it does mention about all you want to see and do, with links and useful addresses:

    http://www.amsterdam.info/

Two days in Amsterdam will cover most of the highlights, but if you want to see all you can spend more time there.

Day trips from Amsterdam will be within the Netherlands, Belgium or just across the border to Germany at most, there is so much to see in this area that it is not worth spending the time and money on travel just to be in a town for a couple of hours.

If you think Berlin is important for you to visit, plan on an open jaw flight so you leave from there, I would say, save it for a next journey.

  3. for 7 days you'd do best staying in country.   outside of amsterdam good day trips to Haarlem (a beautiful city), Markem (an old fashioned fishing village) or the Den Haag or Rotterdam are worthwhile.  Amsterdam is a great walking city and it has great public transportation. The Jordaan area is very interesting (if pricey) and the Museumplein has museums and you can tour one of the diamond manufactures as well there. On wed. at Noon they have free concerts at  Het Concertgebouw (think Carnegie Hall)  The Dam is central to the red light district and a great pedestrian only shopping area on Kalverstraat.    Skip Dutch food, except you must have for breakfast poffertjes (little pancakes with powder, very yummy.  and definitely try Surinamese food.   Do a search for a good Indonesian Rijstaffel (also food) and  on the street, make sure to have stroopwafelen.    There is so much to do in amsterdam.

  4. Smoke marijuina, legally!

  5. Amsterdam is a great city and there's a lot of stuff you can do! Of course you can go to a coffeshop and the red light district and get wasted but there's a lot more to this city.

You can go to the Van Gogh Museum, The Rijksmuseum (Rembrandt) or the Anne Frank house for instance. Also, if you want to check out parts of amsterdam where there aren't too much tourists, go to de Jordaan en de Pijp. If the weather is good, you should definately check out the Vondelpark as well! Have fun!!

  6. I can't give specifcs, but I spent 3 days in Amsterdam and it was not enough. That included travel...So, you may want to think about leaving your itinerary open in case you want to spend an extra day or two there.  There's really a lot to do and see - something different going on in each square, plus the usual tourist spots. And Belgium is simply beautiful - you have to make that trip if you can squeeze it in. Have fun!

  7. Amsterdam - 3 days, Delft - 1 day, Brugge - 1 day, Brussels - 2 days.
