Looking for an suv that I can use to go skiing in the winter. I also camp and do light off roading in the summer. I know I will scratch it up some so I don't want something too nice, but needs to be new enough to be reliable. Possibilities: 4 runner, Cherokee, Grand Cherokee, Montero; what else? Maybe: Durango. No: Ford Explorer or Escape. Your thoughs? Not looking for rock crawler, but maybe something with a lift.

  1. I would go with the Jeep Cherokee. There are a blue million of them out there so you should be able to find a good one at a nice price, they are reliable, easy to work on since they come with a straight inline 6 cylinder engine which has quite a bit of torque which you need for offroading and pulling stuff.

Grand Cherokee would be nice as well, but its a bit larger than the standard cherokee and alot of them come with a V8 which really makes it a gas guzzler.

  2. A really old Range Rover. Those can go over any type of sludge or snow, and are like a family's old dog. Very rugged and tough.

But since you want something newer, I would suggest the 4Runner because it will never break down. It's a Toyota, and is really reliable, but is still rugged.
