Try going to a car auction. You might be able to get something there for under 2 grand.

It's going to be hard to find a car for less than $2,000 that is reliable.  BUT you might get lucky with an older Accord, Civic, Camry or Corolla.  Something in the 1992-1994 range with around 150,000 miles.  Check craigslist on a regular basis.  These types of cars show up there all the time.  The better ones don't last long so have the cash with you and go see the car as soon as possible - usually within the hour.
