My friends and I might shop the footage for a reality show so I guess I need a camera that would have enough pixels for television viewing.

  2. Real camcorders are generally not rated by "pixel count".

They are typically standard definition or high definition.

Best available quality comes from miniDV tape - and most TV stations can deal with that.

There aren't too many camcorders in the price range you specify as this is the "entry" level.

It is preferred that in addition to a mic-in jack, manula audio controls should be available. There are no camcorders in your stated price range that has both.

    Canon ZR800; Canon ZR800

These are the least expensive camcorders with a mic-in jack.

    Canon HV20, HV30, Sony HDR-HC7, HC9

These are the least expensive camcorders with a mic-in jack and manual audio control.
