  1. merral's are great for walking and the do very comfy sandles

  2. Whats wrong with a good sneaker? Sandals heighten the chance of injury and will be uncomfortable no matter what.

  3. It's hard to say as I don't know if you have any foot, leg or back problems all of which factor into finding a good shoe.  I suggest going to a good shoe store (one that sells high quality shoes) and trying on several different styles.  Some brands to look for include: Merrell, Clarks, Softspots, SAS, Josef Sibel, Munro, Hush Puppies, and Sofft just to name a few.  You can find all these brands and more at http://www.footsmart.com/Default.aspx

If you choose to purchase your shoes on line or through a catalog make sure you give yourself plenty of time to return or exchange them it they don't fit correctly.

Any shoe you purchase you should wear around the house or while running errands before you take it on vacation with you.  The last thing you want is to be stuck in Europe with shoes that are uncomfortable after a few hours.

Personally I've always had good luck in my Birkenstock sandals.  I've had them for 12 years (they've been resoled once and recently had the cork redone) and I've worn them everywhere.
