Not sure about the first, references would be the best way to go I would think.

As for the second part, two words:  "boundaries" and "communication."  It's that simple.

If you can find someone you know.... if you go to university still the person might be a fellow student looking for a roommate to share with....other than that you have to follow your own instincts.... the person has to have enough money to help pay the rent.... everything else you decide when you meet a prospective room mate... if you take a liking to the person,  then that is a good start.. I would not share rooms with someone I had some '' strange feeling'' about. I don't think you can get references for a room mate.. you are not hiring him.  or her you are sharing rooms with... you ask questions.. you find out if there is some connection... some feeling that you will get along well...
