  1. It's an official noxious weed in the US and the UK.  Check this out maybe: http://www.cabi-bioscience.org/html/japa... or this: http://www.leeds.gov.uk/Environment_and_...

  2. If you use round up it should kill it, it may take a couple applications. Round UP shouldn't hurt the dog, especially after it dries. The weed may not look dead for a couple days after application, and you don't want to pull it out until it is completely brown from the round up. It works systemically so you have to give it some time.

  3. if u live in the uk u have to tell local council then they can tell u how to get rid of it. the only thing that will kill it is something u need a licence for because it is such a strong chemical.

  4. It its seeded, you'll be fighting it forever.  Still Roundup is your best answer, if applied in late summer...now??  Get the concentrate and mix your own, it will be cheaper.

As for the dogs.......I have them too and wait until I can get them into the house for the evening and then spray.  By morning the chemical is dry and no problem to them unless my little "weed eatin'" dog gets it in her head to eat it.  I keep her fenced away from where I've sprayed.

  5. Thermonuclear warheads, perhaps.  Ok, well, here's how a number of organizations do it:

Have you considered solarization?  It's quite effective if you are in a climate where the soil can be thoroughly warmed and if you can keep the dogs off the plastic long enough. This has the advantage of possibly destroying the seeds in the soil.

Then make sure you have a good solid groundcover down to prevent re-establishment.
