Question:

What is a good way to contribute to a political campaign with dignity?

I have an image in my head of working in a political campaign-- a zealous, proselytizing kind of vibe that I get from it. I would like to support a candidate for an upcoming election whose voice I respect. What is a good way to contribute to a political campaign while not trying to cram something down others' throats? And if this is a wrong way to look at the whole thing, please disabuse me of my point of view! Thanks.

  1. Facial Tattoos are always a subtle way to voice your support!

JK. Just do what you can. Talk to people who show interest, and politely remove yourself from the conversation with those who don't. Don't get trapped into comparisons. You aren't volunteering because you think that one candidate is better than another (which usually means less bad). You're doing it because you think your candidate will be a good leader. Try to find some examples that speak to you, and share those.

  2. You used "dignity" in the same sentence as "political campaign".

About the only way you can participate in a political campaign and maintain your own sense of personal dignity is if you do so under an alias.

  3. A good place to start off is a local political club that is supporting your candidate. Another way is to go to a candidates web site and email or call up the campaign and find out where there are volunteer opportunities available in your area. There are various low-pressure activities you can engage in to support the candidate of your choice. This can range from distributing your candidates' literature to passers-by in high traffic areas like supermarkets, train stops, and the like, to phone banks where you plug your candidate and try to find out if the people you're calling would be willing to support or vote for that candidate. You should be prepared to have a good number of hang ups, but all in all, it's still a wonderful and rewarding experience and you'll feel very happy you did it. Good luck.
