Question:

What is a good way to discipline my dog when it leaves the yard?

First off, I know the first thing to do is to train them NOT to leave in the first place. We have been working on this by using a leash technique where I can let her roam on her own and when she's not paying attention, I can apply some pressure and pull her back while saying "Come". When she does, I praise her and give her a treat. Puppies are not perfect though & she left the yard the other day. Now I did not tell her "No" or scold her in anyway as she eventually came to me and I did not want her to associate her coming to me as something negative. However, she did do something wrong - how should I handle, if at all? Serious training responses only please - no physical hitting or tapping of the nose techniques. Thank you.

  1. It is your fault, not the dog's. You need a fence. You can be fined or even lose your dog if you are reported to animal control.

  2. Why would you want to leave any dog in a yard that wasn't contained?  If the yard is not fenced, leash walk your dog only, and only allow your dog out when on a leash with you on the other end.  No correction is necessary.

  3. put in an invisible fence and keep your pup from harm so when you want to let her out on her own you don't have to worry.

  4. only irresponsible people have dogs in yards that are not secure.

  5. ive heard the best way to discipline a dog is by ignoring it after it does something wrong. However in this case im not sure it will help. But, you could get a fence, leash walk your dog, or get one of those long yard leashes. My friend doesnt have a fenced yard but lets their dog out on a yarrd leash.  Well, i hope i helped a litte. good luck! (:

  6. Thank you for working on this. Too many dogs are not trained to stay in their yards. Sickness, over population and fatalities are just a few of the consequences from dogs wandering out of their yards.

The leash technique is a very good way to start. Your dog needs to also hear your voice when you are training her so she will know by sound when something she is doing is not right. Firmly bringing her back in and using a firm tone will not make her associate negatively with you. She will associate with her actions, and learn that she is not allowed to do those actions. When she has learned that the combination of leash and voice command mean she has reached her boundary, try using only voice command. She will remember the tone. Just use a firm commanding voice. You don't have to yell or scold. Use single word commands, No, come, heal, stay - whatever you choose.

Dogs don't know our language, but they sure understand our emotions (just one reason dogs are the BEST!)

Obviously lots of praise when she does what is expected of her.

Good luck and thank you for being a responsible dog owner.
