What is a good way to fall asleep and get a good night rest?

I start school in 4 days and have trouble sleeping! I can go to bed at 10 and fall asleep at half past 2. And when I wake up I'm always so exhausted and have to fight falling asleep in the middle of the day and usually give in.

Does anyone have any tips on falling asleep faster than 5 hours and feeling great when I wake up?

  1. hmmm, I would say as the other answered, exercise during the day, but also when I had trouble with this I began smoking pot about an hour before I wanted to go to sleep, and then It became very easy to fall asleep, and sleep well for 8 hours. But you may be unable to do that depending on your age and money situation. I wouldn't recommend any kind of pharmaceutical medication as those usually have alot of side effects. Your best and easiest option is probably to A. Exercise during the day and B. Make sure to get yourself into a sleep routine.  Maybe when you have a day off, Stay up that entire night, and the entire next day. Then come 10, sleep for your 8 hours, and get up and then you should be pretty much reset into being ready for bed again at ten the next night.

Also avoid caffeine for about 3 hours before your sleep time

  2. eat carbs an hour or so before you go to bed

    breads ect

  3. I have the same problem! I can go to bed and lay awake for hours because my mind can't stop running! It sounds awfully generic but what helps me is drink a cup of hot tea (caffeine free) with honey somewhere close to bedtime and I also have a little classical music on my I-pod. Seriously, it almost never fails to put me to sleep. It's so relaxing! Here are a few super relaxing songs:

    Clair de lune- Debussy

    Fur Elise- Beethoven

    Waltz in C-Sharp Minor Op.64 No.2- Chopin

Waltz No.18 in A Minor- Chopin

Waltz No. 3 in A Minor Op.34- Chopin

    Raindrop Prelude- Chopin

    Nocturne in G Minor- Chopin

Canon in D Major- Pachelbel--Love, love, love this one!

Also, taking hot showers helps too. It's a lot better if you don't drink anything with caffeine within like 5 hrs. of trying to sleep.

    Hope this helps:)

  4. Yes, excercise, but also glass of milk or wine, completely relax, I had that problem too, found out if my mind was running, the body will run too. Still working on it but doing better. You must clear the mind. It is hard and easier said than done.

  5. i have heard that celery and a bowl of cereal (probably not together) and also vigorous exercises during the day also i read not to do anything on your bed except sleep. dim your lights 1 hour before bed and try to read a book that makes me sleepy. hope those things work for ya!

  6. Have two cups of milk

  7. I find a small fan on low blowing in my face and the TV on will put me under.  The sound and air just lulls me to sleep.

  8. I eat a huge meal right before bed. The combination of being full and warm makes me really sleepy. Also you shouldn't just go to bed at 10 when you've been going to bed a 2am the past couple months. Go to bed a half hour or so earlier each night until you are at the time you want.

  9. Same here- just drink a good nights tea. Trust me it keeps your body warm and sleepy.

  10. Lay down in your bed. Close your eyes and think of something you like. Like ( Ice cream, Chocolate, candy, love, school, ect.) Don't forget to stretch before laying down!! Good luck.

  11. exercise during the day

  12. when you're trying to get to sleep -- concentrate on your breathing...its the same concept as "counting sheep". think of "inhaling" and "exhaling"  ... in through your nose -- out through your mouth ... just try to totally close your mind to anything that may be stressing you out or happening in your life. also, avoid sugary or caffienated food and beverages within 3 hours of going to sleep. you could also wind down by reading a book (one that's not too intense), or watching some sitcoms on TV. although it may be hard to resist taking a little nap during the day -- DONT --- call a friend, go for a walk, come on Y!answers instead, trust me even a little 15min power nap can keep you from sleeping well at night.

    research sleeping tips as well.

just do me a favour and make prescription sleep meds your LAST resort ...  if your lack of sleep ends up hurting your grades, or the problem gets worse -- consult your Doc.

  13. try counting backwards.

or you can repeat everything you did that day-you probably wont get htrough the whole day cuz youll get tired.

OR you can put a tv or radio on but VERY quietly so that you can just hear a whisper. it might help.

hope i helped you.  just think of what you did the day or what you are planning on doing the next day.

you could also try staring at one spot for a long time with out blinking and youll get tired.

  14. I have all ways found that listening to your favorite music at a moderately low volume can help you fall asleep..and midnight snacks all ways help too

  15. BAHH! someone just asked a question jus like this. but anyways, ima have to start exercising too...just like be in bed 30mins-an hour before ur actual bedtime, and lay in the dark, because light keeps you awake.

  16. Try some tea. I would suggest Tension Tamer / Sleepy Time made by Celestial Seasonings. I usually double strength the tea using 1 from each type.

Think / say the alphabet in your mind, visualizing each letter; or numbers. Surprisingly, this actually works!

Buy some ambient / space music, have a cd player near you when you turn in. You can find cd's for relaxation at most department stores, & music / book stores. I prefer electronic drone, but there are many types of sounds / music avail.

  17. reading a book always put me to sleep.

  18. take nyquil

  19. I guess I forgot.  I've been on Ambien for 20 years which I can only afford w/insurance -- otherwise $6/tab!!!  Outrageous!

I've read that you've got to think of nothing but that seems ridiculous. But, when I've just about made it to sleep, I've noticed that I'm not really thinking -- just kind of drifting, so maybe you try to blunk out your concerns and think of a blank wall or something like a pleasant monotonous activity -- like reading this!  Or a movie star's face. Or something.

Rooting for you.  Hope I helped.

  20. drink a glass of warm milk

it has chemicals in it that make you feel sleepy
