  1. try non harsh discipline and work your way upward til he or she begins to respond

  2. Three year olds don't listen.  They don't have the same cognative powers that adults do. What you told a 3 year old five minutes ago is forgotten.  These are NOT mineature adults they are small children.  I suggest that you stop trying to force your child what he is not capeable of doing and start learning to use time outs rather than "harsh discipline"

  3. I have a three and a half year old.  I have learned not to scold him directly.  If he hits someone I wouldn't say "You're a bad boy" I say "Hitting is bad".  I have learned to correct the bad behavior and not him.  Sometimes I think if you scold them without giving reason they do not understand.

I also put him in time out, I found that having him stand in a corner is more effective than sitting in a chair.  He is three so making him be still and not allowing him to look around drives him nuts.

    Good luck!
