What is a good way to introduce two adult ferrets to each other after one has lost a cagemate?

I lost my six-year-old ferret to lymphoma yesterday, and her seven-year-old lifelong buddy, Mokey, is now left without a cagemate for the first time in six years. I am watching her closely for signs of depression and making sure that she's eating ok and getting plently of extra love and attention. I do have another ferret, Evy, who is four years old. She's very sweet and timid, so she's always been terrified by my other ferrets. She has always lived alone as a result. But now that Mokey has no buddy, I would love for the two to live with each other. When is it appropriate to start to introduce poor Mokey to Evy? And how can i get them to bond if Evy is so afraid of Mokey? I've tried putting them in a neutral room and they do wrestle and bite each others' necks, and then they separate and all is quiet. I also tried letting them eat Ferretone together off of my hand to get them to bond. I'm so worried that Mokey will die of grief for her lost friend if I can't get her together with Evy.

  1. Hi Chelsea... I'm so sorry to hear that you lost your ferret yesterday.

It's important to continue focusing on giving Mokey extra amounts of attention to help with the grieving process.

I would consider watching Mokey and see how she is doing within the week.  If there isn't any considerable change you could begin to try and introduce Evy to her.

Even though they have been introduced in the past, consider introducing them slowly over a period of time.

The following website provides excellent tips on how to slowly make the introductions easy for both: http://www.everythingferret.com/ferret_i...

  2. Get a second cage, put the new one in it and keep the cages close together so they can get used to eachother. Give them separate play time until you think they are ready, then let them play together, but watch them closely! Fighting is normal, but break it up after a couple seconds.

It worked for us, hope it works for you!
