  1. you can do a fundraiser! Start selling something nearby a popular supermarket ( like Raley's)

  2. I wasn't going to respond, since "how to raise money" is a frequently asked questions on Yahoo Answers and you can go into the resolved section and see all of the many things that have been suggested. But the previous poster who said "50 odd years on and nothing has changed" is so wrong, and I wanted to make sure she didn't discourage you from doing this activity.

The famine is a nice idea only if you use the experience to educate others. You could keep a journal about what it's like to be hungry, what your thoughts are, etc., and post about it on your my space blog, along with links to organizations like the World Food Programme which are helping to feed people in developing countries (and to help those people feed themselves). You could post statistics about hunger as well -- what countries have the most children who are malnurished? What are some anti-hunger success stories? (such as Ethiopia) What are some of the issues and debates around addressing hunger, such as CARE International refusing a massive food donation from the USA recently because they felt it undermined the incomes of local farmers? All of this on your blog would help get your message out to many more people.

You could ask your friends and family to donate a dollar for each of the 30 hours you are going to fast -- so if your parents give you $30, the family next door gives you $30, and a friend and her family gives you $30, you would already be almost halfway to your goal.

But it's important if you are going to handle money that you have a way to show your donors that your really did donate it to the World Food Programme, CARE International, or whatever organization it is that you intend to receive this money. You need to ensure your family and friends that this money will really go where you say it will, through documentation (not just you telling them it will go somewhere).

Good luck with your project, and don't let anyone dissuade you from trying to help. Anti-hunger efforts DO make a difference. We hear far more about the latest crisis than we do about success stories, but if you visit sites like ReliefWeb and WFP regularly, you will see the efforts that work.

  3. get more and more people informed of what's happening and how they could easily be part of solving it by giving donations.. treat donors nicely.. make sure they know how where their money specifically gets.. you can also try activities-for-a-cause like concerts, exhibits, contests, etc..

  4. I admire your enthusiasm but I`m afraid like me a lot of people are getting disillusioned about helping Africa..I`m 60 now and when I was a school child we were doing different things then to raise money...50 odd years on and nothing has changed...maybe some people you cant help...
