Longer and better lens. And more patience, birds aren't there for your pleasure.

Try putting up a bird feeder...a platform feeder will allow you to get a very good view of the birds for some good photos.

Get some food out for the type of birds you want to photo, and make sure that your flash is turned off.  Then just stay quiet, point, and click.
