For example if you're in the wilderness and have no way of knowing how much sunlight you have left without a watch, what is a good way to know?

  1. back before there were watches and clocks people used the sun. to tell them what time it was. the sun rose in the east and at noon it was north and it set in the west and at night of course it was gone. obviously the same as now.  you cant pin point it to the exacted minute but you can estimate the hour.

  2. First, try and figure out which way is north. Then, let north be 12:00, like on an analog clock. now get a few feet south of the stick and look at which way the shadow is going, and how far it extends. I think that however far the shadow goes toward you, the later it is after twelve. Also, I think you probably could tell if it was AM or PM.

    Hope I helped!

  3. the position of the sun in the sky, and the length and direction of shadows.

  4. I'd just take a watch or cell phone with me, then there's no question.

  5. If you are just interested in how much daylight you have left, you can estimate it by looking at how close the sun is from the horizon, the closer it it to the horizon the less time you have (assuming its setting, and not rising, but unless you have been asleep, or in a cave, you will know if its morning or night.

now if you need to know the time, you will have to know north and then make some sort of sundial.

To find north, you can drive a stake in the ground, then place a rock or other marker on the end of its shadow, leave it a while, come back and mark where the tip of the shadow is now. A line drawn through both markers will be east/west.

place your left foot on the first marker, and your right foot on the second mark, and you will be facing north.

this works in both the north, and south hemispheres

  6. Take 16 inches foldable stick. Keep it in L shape in the floor such that the shadow of vertical position coincide with bottom end.Now you measure the vertical length. Suppose if it measures 12 .5 inches divide by 2.5 ( 2.5 Naligai is one hour ) it is 5.Add six because the sun starts from six. Then now the result is 11 o clock. You can find the correct time in this way. This is from ancient records.

  7. if you know which direction you are facing than look to the sun. See its position in the sky
