  1. Legacy.com is a free site that I have just started using.

  2. Before you go to a website, start by asking questions about your family.  Your parents, grandparents, great-grandparents.  Get full names (including middle names), birth dates, birth places, date of death, place of death, names of spouses, names of children, dates etc on as many people as you can get information about.

Then you can download a genealogy program that will allow you to input your family's information.

There just isn't a website that will present you will a finished family tree just by plugging in your name.  You will have to piece it together person by person, unless someone else in your family line has already done the work and has posted it. (Even then you only get that part of your family)

It's actually detective work.  Once you know the branches of the family tree closest to you, THEN you can start to fill in the blanks by looking online for information.

I highly recommend http://www.cyndislist.com/ - as the first website to visit.  It's a free website that lists just about every genealogy website know to exist.  It's categorized and indexed and gives you information about the website.

    Good luck

  3. We use the Ancestry.co.uk site - this gives us Births Marriages and Deaths in UK, also the results of teh census's from 1841. Without paying you do get some info - but we have paid on a monthly basis (about £10) which is much better. Also, other people have submitted their family trees which you can look at and perhaps find where you  have a common relative.

There is older info (based on parish records) on the mormon site familysearch.org

  4. Go to your local  public library, many have genealogy sections and some offer free use of Ancestry.com and other sites. tribalpages.com and legacyfamilytree.com Standard edition is free. also familysearch.org.

  5. ancestry.com

  6. ancestory.com
