  1. Definitely go visit barns firsthand, and don't go by what other people say on a website. You will want to see for yourself what type of horses and people go there; a trail rider will not be happy at a saddleseat barn. How the horses are cared for; are the horses fat and happy and the stalls clean? Or is there an overwhelming smell and cobwebs hanging from the ceilings and chewed up boards in the stalls? Cost is an issue for what services they provide; is it $100 self care and you have to do and provide everything yourself, or is it in the neighborhood of $400 and they do everything including turnout and blanketing.

Write a list of things you want and need in a barn, and then find the one that most closely matches your list.

    Self care/full care

    trails/arena

    lessons/no lessons

    show barn/boarding barn

    cost

    cleanliness

on site manager/no one there full time

nice people/no one to ride with

What's important to you and your horse?

  2. go visit the barns yourself to get a real idea of what they are about. Go at different times of day also. website reviews are not going to tell you what you need. Do you need a hunter jumper barn or a more relaxed atmosphere? also full care and parital care barns are very different. good luck finding a great barn.

  3. Probably the basic review sites. Yelp.com Yahoo.com also has reviews. I would read the reviews in combination with visiting each one. Keep people's opinions in mind but go see for yourself and try not to base your decision TOO heavily on online reviews as they are not always that accurate of depictions.
