I've tried so many different weed killers this year I can't see straight. I pulled last year thinking that if I got to them early I would come out on top. I was so wrong not only did they come back I was over run and thus I started the chemicals. Nothing will kill these weeds, I need help.

  1. Pre-emergents will not work on  perennial weeds.  they work great to control crabgrass and the like but the weeds you describe need to be kept mowed down.  If this is a garden area your best bet might be to start over because you have to keep them down so that they cannot photosynthesize.  If it's a waste area just mow it low and often.  after a few years the weeds will die off but you have to be consistent.  There are poisons that will kill them but I'm reluctant to use anything quite that deadly.  I fear for the food chain.

  2. There are indeed weeds that cannot be killed by Roundup.  They are usually perennial weeds coming up from some underground food storage vessel like a tuber so they have more energy stored up to grow than most of us have the willpower to kill.

You can beat these dastardly weeds but you have to wear them them by continually chopping them back, not letting them get more than an inch tall to where they recharge their root system.  It takes years!!! for some weeds to die out....most garders can't last.

Their multiplication may be due to their root system being chopped up.  For these perennials, chopping their roots is the best way to propagate them......each root bit starts a new plant.  You have to keep chopping and chopping until they just give up.

The other thought is seeds.  Some weeds can set a half several thousand seeds per plant.  Letting just one plant seed also make your future work so much harder.

Fortunately most weeds are not perennial and can be killed fairly easily.  Apparently you have the exception.  Millions of acres of ranch land are lost to grazing animals including wildlife grazing due to certain unconquerable weeks.

If you are in the US try contacting your Cooperative Extension Service agent in your county.  Google search (your state) Cooperative Extension Service and follow the links through to find your county......actually, just Google (your county, state) Cooperative Extension Service...that might be faster.  The agent is an advanced degreed agronomist or horticulturist with access to the state university staff and research staff to solve these problems....hopefully for you.

Using gas, kerosene, diesel pollutes and damages the soil, pollutes groundwater and streams.

  3. Get your glyphosate from a farm suppies store and use it at the maximum recommended strength.  It will kill ground elder in one go, and none of the roundup from gadren centres does that.

  4. You need to stop germination.  Look up pre emergence on the Internet, that might help.
