What is a government ? when was the first and what is its purpose?

As cavemen we asked... "s******g ourselves is boring... cant we get someone to do that for us?", and so government formed.

To regulate the affairs of a Nation for the greater good of its people. Try and imagine what might happen if we didn't have a Government. That will probably tell you why we need one. Would people operate in their own interest, or for the greater good?

The "first" government was so far back in history that it was, literally, prehistorical.

The purpose of government is do rule over the people. James Madison said that if men were angels, there would be no need for government. In other words, if there were no government, then all of the cynics in the world would be treating you and me like h**l.

Government, like prostitution has existed in some form since the beginning of human history.

Like prostitution, no society has ever found a way to live without it. So it must fulfil a basic need.

But like prostitution, most decent people find it a rather nasty, degrading business and try to have as little to do with it as possible.
