What is a great strategy game for 2 players?

Question

I enjoy these games: Settlers of Catan, Axis & Allies, Monopoly, Chess, Puerto Rico. And I'm looking for a new game to play mainly with 2 players. The option for extra players is best but 2 is essential.

I tried Attika and hated it. Ticket to Ride, Carcassone, Risk are all surprisingly average.

ide say risk is a good one but that also relys a lot on the dice. the two best that i know of other than chess are            stratego(VERY FUN) and mastermind!

There is an awesome game called Stratego as someone else mentioned.. this is my favorite game.. I used to play it with my brother all the time when we were younger. It's basically like capture the flag only its a board game and it deals with numbers.. bigger numbers take out lower numbers.. it's pretty fun..

Mancala is an excellent strategy game for two.  It is one of the most ancient games know to man, has been found in many cultures, is easy to learn and to play, and a game moves along quickly.  It is deceptively simple yet amazingly complex.  You can make a game from an empty egg carton and 36 or 48 stones or dried beans or pebbles if you don't have one.  It is worth a try.

i like canasta, there are alot of rule sbut once you get the hang of it, its fun, and there is an option to play with 2 or 4 players.  i also like the game pente, mancala doenst involve to much strategy but its still fun!

We like the improved European Ticket to Ride.  We have both the US and European versions, and the expanded rules of the European version make this a much more strategic 2-player game.

If you don't mind abstracts, check out Ingenious and Blokus (travel edition for 2p).  Rio Grande has a series of solid two player games, the most popular being Lost Cities.  Not high strategy, and a fair amount of luck, but a good, solid, fun game.

Go is a great strategy game for two. It was invented by the Chinese yet perfected by the Japanese. It is over 4000 years old.

The point of the game is to capture the most territory. There is also a Manga on it called Hikaru No Go.
