  1. This is a cast metal or likewise fitted portal through which passes cable, hawser or wire that would be too abrasive

for less protected hawsehole at bow.  The heavy mooring

choice was initially man-powered but today an electronic

suite may command motor to release or draw.  Have no

use for hawsehole or hawsepipe nor suffer the same.  I've

heard what was termed Hawser Chantey so reader may

have opportunity to growl lyrics, stamp feet rhythmically, and

shuffle-dance around an imaginary sail era windlass.

  2. Not to be confused with hashpipe Starr. Which I think you've been onto today.

It is the openning through which the anchor chain or rode(rope) passes.

    Addendum.>>>>>

Please note: it is not simply a through hull......a vessel will also have a hawse pipe on deck where the rode exits the locker. So it's a bit of a missnomer to refer to it as a through hull....yes, some are either through the toe rail or bullwark and also directly through the hull from the locker....but don't forget the deck hawse...clearly, it is not a through hull.

  3. A hawespipe is a thru- hull for rope, or chain

  4. Hawsepiper is an informal maritime industry term used to refer to a merchant ship’s officer who began his or her career as an unlicensed merchant seaman and did not attend a traditional maritime college/academy to earn the officer license

  6. Hawespipes fit in hawesholes , a fitting where anchorr lines or chain goes through the hull.
