What is a healthy amount of calories to burn a day?

So supposedly your body burns 1000 calories a day just being alive. If I consume around 1500-1800 calories a day, what would be a good amount of calories to burn per day for descent weight loss? I'm 16, weigh 152 lbs and I want to be somewhere around 125-130. Would it be unhealthy to burn 1400-1500 a day? I use a Nordic Track ski exercise machine thing, which I can burn about 700 calories in one hour on. Any other exercise tips are welcome!

  1. Well, more calories burned the better, as long as you can handle it. It is a good idea to burn 200-400 calories a day more than consumed. So if you normally consume 1500-1800 then bring it down to 1200-1500 (300 calorie reduction). So if your body burns 1000 calories a day just being alive, and you consume 1500 calories, then you need to burn 500 calories to maintain your weight. 200-400 more burned a day, will make you lose weight.


  2. There is no amount of calories that are unsafe to burn off as long as these conditions are met :

    1) You have at least 1,400 calories left over for basic bodily functions.

    2) The exercise you are using doesn't cause any injuries or other problems that might come with overexerting oneself.

    It should be noted that a lot of athletes in intense training regularly burn over 10,000 calories a day.  

  3. I wouldn't go over 800. You are right! Many people think they need to burn more than they eat, but you're right it is unhealthy. You can get sick and have serious injuries while exercising.

    If you were to burn 1000 more calories you would have to eat 1000 more calories.

    100-200 a day should be fine. 700 is great! But does it work all your areas? It'll be good for your legs and stomach.


  4. Ok. i read this from a olympic article about how phelps eats 12,000 calories a day lol... You can eat as many calories as you want but the draw back is that you have to burn more or the same. You have to burn more if you want to lose weight. But eating a lower calorie dosent neccessarily make you lose weight. The main way to lose weight is to eat healthy and excerisce daily.
