What is a horse training stick for and how do you use it?

I am taking care of an arabian and the previous owners gave us a training stick, but i don't know how to use it and what for... please help!

a....training stick?   Could you be a little more specific?   Is it a dressage whip, a lunging whip, a riding crop, a target stick?  What does it look like? I'll come back later to see your more detailed description and try to help!
