  1. A hybrid solar eclipse is intermediate between a total and annular eclipse. At some points on the surface of the Earth it is visible as a total eclipse, whereas at others it is annular. Hybrid eclipses are rather rare.

  3. You can have a solar eclipse that, for example, starts out as a partial - or penumbral eclipse,  then it becomes a total eclipse, and sometimes it even goes back to penumbral.  What's going on is that the shadow of the Moon starts out not quite close enough to the Earth to have the dark center part - the umbra - reach the ground.  But in the middle, when the Moon is closer, it does reach the ground, and at the end, it's too high again.  The Earth is a sphere.  The Moon's orbit isn't circular - it's an ellipse.

There was a hybrid just a few years ago.

  4. This type of eclipse is somewhere between a total eclipse and an annular eclipse. At some places on Earth it's seen as a total eclipse, and and in other parts of the world it's seen as an annular eclipse.

  5. a hybrid eclipse is a very rare case wherein in some parts of the earth they see the solar eclipse as a total solar eclipse while in some other parts they see the eclipse as an annular eclipse. The duality comes about when the vertex of the Moon's umbral shadow pierces the Earth's surface at some points, but falls short of the planet along other sections of the path. The unusual geometry is due to the curvature of the Earth's surface which brings some geographic locations into the umbra while other positions are more distant and enter the antumbral rather than umbral shadow.
