  1. The power station which is usually near a dam (impoundment).  Falling water turns a generator to make electricity.


  2. A electricity generating plant that converts the kinetic energy from flowing water into electricity. Usually the water is impounded behind a dam to give it head (the distance it drops) but sometimes water is diverted through a penstock, a long pipe which carries the water downhill. In large rivers a generator may be directly submerged into the current.
