  1. She is being asked to serve as a jury member. Everybody enrolled to vote has to do it. It is compulsary unless you can provide an extremely life threatening reason why you can't make it. You can get a large fine if you don't do it but there is a huge chance that whatever case she is selected to serve as a jury member for, that she won't get chosen anyway. Both sides of a court get to say which members they don't want and they always have way more jury members than are required. Employers must give those summoned the time off work under law.

  2. No, you are being asked to appear for jury duty

  3. Junk mail. Just toss it out.

  4. It is a call to come to the court house to be in a pool of other citizens from which juries for trials will be picked.  It is not a conviction, it is a civic duty under the law which gives you and every other citizen the right to trial by a jury of your peers (other citizens).   If you don't know this, then you and your mother need to take a civics or government class or at least get a book on citizenship of the type used by people wanting to earn citizenship, which should be available in the library.

Jury calls are done in various ways in various states, usually from voting rolls or more recently from driver's license records since people are refusing to register to vote to get out of jury duty.

The lawyers from both sides and perhaps the judge will ask her (you) questions and from the answers will agree on which people are unacceptable and which are okay and those people will sit on the jury while the facts of the case are explained.  The judge will explain what is to be done along the way.

A jury trial may last a day or may go on for weeks, although judges know in advance how complicated it is.  Normally the jury summons explains who does not have to come in - like nursing mothers, etc., who can opt out - like people on a jury in the last six months - and what number to call if you will be out of town and want a postponement.

  5. it is a summons, or notice to appear, at court for possible selection to serve on the jury for a court case.  ppl are selected from the voter roles.  it is mandatory that ppl serve unless the have a valid medical or physical reason why this would be a hardship.   it is the duty of citizens to serve as it is in our constitution that all citizens have a right to a speedy trail by a jury of their peers.  being summoned does not automatically mean that she will be selected to serve as lawyers for both sides have input as to who is selected.

  6. Jury Duty
