What is a knock on in rugby?

i am starting to get into rugby and i dont fully understand everything yet. a knock on is one of those things.

A knock on is when you drop the ball forward.  Its kinda like a fumble in American football except that if you drop the ball backwards (towards you're own goal line) then its not a knock-on.  You can kick the ball forward but you can't advance the ball with your hands.
