What is a legal land contract?

i was buying this place on a land contract and i found out information that the owner had to maintain the property until i got it paid off.the roof started to leak and the sewer messed up.when i asked them to fix it they said it was my responsibility but it states that they are.i just want to know if my contract is legal to hold up in court,and or should i take them to court.

That's hard to answer without more information.  In general, land contracts typically put major maintenance on the owner and minor items on the tenant/buyer, which is legally binding.  Take the contract to an attorney who handles real estate transactions or consumer law in your area, and seek representation.  You may need to give a specific written notice before filing suit, and you may need to attempt to repair the items yourself and seek compensation from the owner.  Most of it depends on the wording of the contract, and then it depends on your state's laws.
