What is a legal way to break a lease without hiring a lawyer?

My fiance and I have seen people looking into our apartment. We just signed a year lease and have been there almost four months. We thought it was a good place to live and we've had people try and sell us "certain" things when all we were doing is walking our dog.

How bad would it hurt us if we just left?

  1. See if they have any clause in your lease for something like, losing your job or transferring out of state, documents like that are not hard to come by and may send you on your merry way.

  2. Read your lease for their terms of breaking the lease, if any.  They may also allow subleasing if you could find someone to do that.

  3. complain to your apartment manager. Tell them you don't feel safe. Ask them to do something about it. If still nothing, contact your locale tenants rights office. Tell them your situation, ask for their advise. It will be documented, and they may let you out of the lease. Whatever happens make sure everything is in writing and keep those papers for at least 7years. As far as people peeping in your windows and offering you illegal stuff call the police make reports. Make sure everything is reported and recorded. Good luck
