There are a lot of online discount brokers out there that are legitimate.  You should be able to trust most or all of the brokers approved by FINRA http://www.finra.org/.  You also shouldn't be scared to invest with brokers that are SIPC insured.  This means that up to $500,000 of your net equity balance and up to $100,000 of cash will be covered in the event that the brokerage firm fails.  Some brokers also offer "excess SIPC" coverage through third-party insurance companies.

I personally use Firstrade http://www.firstrade.com/.  They are cheaper than big name brokers like Etrade, Schwab, TD Ameritrade, and Scottrade.  They are also approved by FINRA and SIPC insured so you do not have be afraid of investing.
