I'm doing a debate in my class and I was just wondering what the libral vlues are and what they believe. I think that I'm a moderate. I'd like you to put them in kinda simpler terms too.

  1. Liberals are as a group are heavily democratic.  They strive for a type of utopia, which they believe can come about by observing a commitment to a cause of freedom of action and thought and society.  Two groups that are decidedly Liberal are the g*y community and environmentalists.

On the other hand are the Conservatives, who are heavily Republican.  They stick to a set of beliefs that value security, growth and traditional values.  Two groups that are heavily conservative are Christians and Gun rights activists.

Moderates are the third group.  They are less restrained by the divisive lines that other groups draw.  However, they are also extremely difficult to define.  A moderate can be Pro-Choice on abortion (a decidedly Liberal standpoint), and a Gun Rights Activist (a decidedly Conservative standpoint) at the same time.  Many times, a group or organization that has yet to align with a political group or ideology are called Moderates.

  2. A belief that society owes them something, rather than wanting society to provide them with the means to live a fulfilling, independent life.  It comes down to rights vs responsibilities.

In Canada, our liberal party has ruled for so long and have sued and intimidated every party that opposes them.  Today, they are made up mainly of women, their neutered males, and minorities.  They are slowly becoming a fringe party, much like the New Democratic Party.

  3. Democrats are considered "liberal."

It's kind of tricky, because even 30 years ago, liberal and left-wing were completely different things; liberals were somewhat left-leaning, but not very extreme at all. Recently, more conservative elements have started equating liberals and leftists to make Democrats seem like communists.

  4. a socialist, one that expect the government to be responsible for everyone instead of being responsible for themselves

  5. Liberalism is the philosophy that new and different is naturally better than old and traditional.

Conservativism is the opposite.  The philosophy that oldness and consistency is naturally better than change.

Its not a political philosophy... but is often applied to politics.  Its not a criticism.  Its not necessarily reserved for politics, or religion, or society.

Its not like you are either one or the other in all things... a label doesnt have to apply to all things in life.  You can be very conservative with some things and very liberal with others.  Its not a dichotomy... its a spectra...

When it comes to morality... particularly in the way of relationship values and romance and sexuality and marriage... I am very very conservative.

When it comes to technology and most all other subjective components of society, I am very liberal.

But sometimes one label can be used in opposing ways.  To be liberal as an environmentalist could mean that I want to change the laws and policies to preserve the environment... that I am calling for drastic change from the "freedom to destroy" that we currently observe.  Then again, I could be conservative in that I believe we should revert to a more naturalistic environmental outlook... again, protecting the environment by not allowing technology and social "progress" demolish it.  Conversely, I could liberal in that I believe in the progress of human development and that I care less for the environment than I do for the city streets.  Or I could be conservative in that I believe in the traditionalists take on humanity dominates nature and can do with it as we please.  See? Very contradictory.

  6. liberals are a wide spectrum of freedom lovers who oppose the strict interpretations of the law or religion . they tend to have more humane approach to all kinds of cases . they either support a total freedom of choice or only open to some limited choices . they are more open to minorities and nearer to socialism . liberalism is supposed to be a political tendency , but liberalism is a personal choice as well under different classifications . g**s and similar groups are seen as liberal movements even if some hardliners are g**s for example .

  7. Nick almost answered it. Good answer Nick

  8. liberals are hippies.
