  1. In British politics, a Lord is someone who sits in the House of Lords (the upper house of parliament).  Although collectively they are referred to as 'Lords', female members are not called a 'lord' and it is not all male members are called 'lord' either.  Women may be referred to as 'lady'.

A wife of a lord, a knight (someone called 'Sir John Smith' for example), or any other form of aristocracy is referred to as a Lady.  Also, in British aristocracy, a lord may be an hereditary title that may have no political power anymore.
