  1. Market research is a discipline of observation and interpretation.  Essentially they observe consumer behavior (consumer may be people or businesses) and gather quantitative data about it.  Using that data, they search for trends, and test theories, about what "clicks" with consumers for a specific offering (product, service, etc.)

    Market research has changed a lot in the past 10 years.  But that can be said for the entire marketing discipline.  Market research and consumer behavior has embraced lots of technological advancements which makes much of the research go more quickly

    A degree in Market Research, Mathematics, with emphasis on Statistics is a good start.  Sociology and Psychology courses are great help too.

    I recommend reading "Meatball Sundae" by Seth Godin.  It's fun and gets you off on the right foot.
