  1. Are you talking saltwater marsh or freshwater marsh?

    A freshwater marsh is much more likely to have a soft, spongy bottom due to continual accretion of organic matter and fine particulates (clay, etc.)

    A saltwater marsh can also have a soft, spongy bottom but in some places can have a firm, sandy bottom depending on currents and shore deposition patterns.
