  1. To support the mattress and keep it off the floor.

  2. A mattress base is used to put a kiddie pool on, to support it and give a little shock resistance, when diving from a 35 foot high dive board......

  3. Do you mean 'boxsprings' or the like?  We were wondering that ourselves.  I think in the old days they provided extra cushioning to the bed because beds were harder.

But last year we got a Comfortaire mattress (highly recommend the Cerenity, or Serenity, forget how it's spelled--love it!), CA king size this time around, and the woman at the company said, 'You don't need the 'boxsprings' if you have a platform bed.  If you don't, then it's best to lay it on the floor (Ie., we couldnt put it on our Queen size boxsprings).

So we laid it on the floor.  The mattress is GREAT....but for Americans to be getting up and down off the floor every day, and NOT have a 'sit-level' bed to sit on, read on, put their shoes on while sitting on,  have access to the end tables, etc......?  We really missed that higher bed!

So we finally got CA King-size 'boxsprings,' although they have a harder surface top than regular boxsprings (the guy recommended them, much more protective of our Comfortaire mattress).  And ah, so NICE to be sitting on a usual-level bed!

BTW, the Comfortaire Serenity, based on my extensive research, is the BEST mattress to buy--and my back feels so much better now every morning!  Another joy of it is that it has dual air bladders, so that you and your spouse can each adjust the firmness to your own comfort level.  If I recall correctly,  I think it also came with a 20 year warranty.  I bought a queen-size one for my daughter, too.

But you DON'T need to buy the Comfortaire 'boxsprings'--you can get less expensive ones elsewhere, just make sure they have that firmer top to them.

Go to epinions.com and read about mattresses before you buy your next one--a lot of people on there say that the big brand names have dropped in quality in recent years.

And by all means AVOID those 'comfort pillow tops,' or whatever they're called. They DO NOT HOLD UP--people talk about permanent "dents," and how the mfg warranty won't cover them.
