  1. It comes from school times, when everyone was excused from class to go run around outside.

I think of the phrase as "a field day for the media" -- something that's a good-sized story that is sort of dumped in our laps. It's usually associated with tabloid-type stories, although it can extend into other, more legitimate areas.

For example, when the news broke about Alex Rodriguez's divorce from wife Cynthia, there were said to be connections to Madonna and Lenny Kravitz. Let's see -- baseball star, music stars, big money, rumors of hanky-panky -- that's a lot of elements. So parts of the media can have a field day with it.

When the 2000 election was too close to call in Florida, you could certainly say the media had a field day with it. There were plenty of angles to be covered, angry statements from both sides, voters who felt confused, judges who took stances.

  2. In this case you trust the top contributor. He's usually right!

  3. A Media Field Day = When Poor Americans do something wrong

-Poor Americans stealing water bottle from Wal-Mart during Katrina

-Poor Americans taking TV from Wal-Mart during Katrina... Exxon CEO might want to buy those TVs

-Being call Liberal Media after beating the war drum for the Idiot
