  1. Thetis.

In Greek mythology Thetis was sea nymph who was married off to a mortal man because of a prophecy that her son would be greater than his father. That son was Achilles, who became famous for his role in the Trojan war, but died at a young age.

She was one of the 'Nereids', who were known for being helpful and friendly towards sailors fighting perilous storms. They rode dolphins and sea turtles and could predict the future.

The myths about the Nereids may have been the origin for the stories of "mermaids". Even the names sound similar: Sound out: "ner-eids" vs. "mer-maids". It could be that "mermaids" is just a mispronuciation of "nereids" that was passed down orally during the dark ages when most people couldn't read and write - so the old myths had to be passed by word of mouth.

Edit: Also, Achilles band of warriors was called the "Myrmidons" - which is possibly related to stories of mermaids/mermen.
