  1. A mineralogy is a study of minerals

  2. Wikipedia says that "Mineralogy is an Earth Science focused around the chemistry, crystal structure, and physical (including optical) properties of minerals. Specific studies within mineralogy include the processes of mineral origin and formation, classification of minerals, their geographical distribution, as well as their utilization."

From my experiance, if you take mineralogy, the class starts with Crystallography.  Its all about crystal symmetry,  this is a hard topic because generally its a new concept for most people.  Phase Equalibria, is also particularly difficult.  It requires a great deal of thermodynamics knowledge and physics.
